How Salary Tax Is Calculated in Pakistan
Pakistan uses a progressive marginal tax slab system for individuals. A common misconception among employees is that moving into a higher tax slab causes their entire income to be taxed at the higher rate. This is completely incorrect.
In a progressive tax system, your income is taxed in tranches:
- The first Rs. 600,000 is completely tax-free (0% tax).
- Income between Rs. 600,001 and Rs. 1,200,000 is taxed at only 1%.
- Income between Rs. 1,200,001 and Rs. 2,200,000 is taxed at 11%, plus the base fixed tax of Rs. 6,000 accumulated from lower slabs.
- Only the portion of income that exceeds each threshold is subjected to that slab's higher marginal percentage.
Salary Tax Calculation Example (Rs. 3,000,000 Annual Salary)
Let us walk through a practical example of an employee earning a monthly salary of Rs. 250,000 (which equals an annual taxable salary of Rs. 3,000,000):
- Annual Taxable Income: Rs. 3,000,000
- Applicable Slab: Slab 4 (Rs. 2,200,001 to Rs. 3,200,000)
- Fixed Base Tax: Rs. 116,000
- Amount Exceeding Slab Threshold (Rs. 2,200,000): Rs. 3,000,000 − Rs. 2,200,000 = Rs. 800,000
- Tax on Excess Amount (20%): 20% × Rs. 800,000 = Rs. 160,000
- Total Annual Income Tax: Rs. 116,000 + Rs. 160,000 = Rs. 276,000
- Estimated Monthly Tax Deduction: Rs. 276,000 ÷ 12 = Rs. 23,000 / month
- Annual Net Take-Home Salary: Rs. 3,000,000 − Rs. 276,000 = Rs. 2,724,000 (Rs. 227,000 / month)
- Effective Tax Rate: (Rs. 276,000 ÷ Rs. 3,000,000) × 100 = 9.20%
Monthly Salary vs Annual Salary
Under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, income tax is fundamentally an annual assessment. When you enter a monthly salary, our calculator multiplies it by 12 to determine your annualized taxable income, applies the statutory FBR slabs, and divides the resulting annual tax by 12 to provide your Estimated Monthly Tax.
What Is Take-Home Salary?
Take-home salary (also referred to as net pay) is the estimated disposable income you receive after mandatory income tax deductions:
Take-Home Salary = Gross Taxable Income − Calculated Income Tax
Please note that your actual bank payslip may reflect additional non-tax payroll deductions, such as Employee Provident Fund (EPF), voluntary pension contributions, group life/health insurance, or loan repayments.
Tax Year 2027 Period in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the fiscal tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Tax Year 2027 corresponds to the financial year beginning on 1 July 2026 and ending on 30 June 2027. The tax calculated using this tool applies to income earned during this 12-month period.
Important Note About Taxable Income
This calculator uses the entered income as your net taxable salary for the basic slab calculation. In real-world payroll, certain allowances (such as official medical allowance up to 10% of basic salary or actual reimbursements) and eligible tax credits (under Section 62/63 for pension and insurance) may reduce your net taxable income.
